“…The estimates for all three factors in the overall internal sense of coherence level changes were significant (p < .05). Our study results on scale SOC-13 corresponded to the data of other researchers (Oosthuizen & Van Lill, 2008 -the assessment that they used on the scale SOC-29). Lithuanian internal sense of coherence research was conducted by Javtokas (2009), but he used a very concise modified version of the SOC questionnaire preferred for mass analysis.…”

“…In psychological perspectives, SOC has consequently been framed as a wellness-protecting (Bernabé et al, 2009) and stress resource (Jakobsson, 2011;Lindström & Eriksson, 2005;Togari, Yamazaki, Nakayama, & Shimizu, 2007) orientation to life. SOC originates as a psychological construct from Antonovsky's salutogenic theory in which people's mental health or psychological well-being constitutes oscillation along a behavioural continuum ranging from optimal health to total ill health (Barnard, Peters, & Muller, 2010;Jakobsson, 2011;Lindström & Eriksson, 2005). Antonovsky (1979) coined the term SOC, defining the concept broadly as a general and universal life-orientation (Gropp, Geldenhuys, & Visser, 2007;Muller & Rothmann, 2009).…”

“…Previous research has shown that strong meaningfulness is often related to a strong belief system (Griffiths, 2009) or spirituality, thus affecting mental health and well-being positively (Mayer, 2011). Individuals with a strong SOC are expected to display control, resourcefulness, and perseverance in difficult situations (Barnard et al, 2010). Their well-being also seems to be influenced by a meaningful purpose in life (Mayer, 2011).…”

“…On the one hand, income has not been universally accepted as fundamental to psychological well-being (Kahneman & Deaton, 2010) owing to varied research findings, and, on the other, very few studies such as that by Barnard, Peters and Muller (2010) focus on financial well-being in relation to psychological well-being.…”

“…Salutogenic theory is a unique health-oriented theory about people's sense of coherence (SOC) established by Antonovsky in the field of psychological well-being (Liukkonen et al, 2010). A study by Barnard et al (2010) first explored the relationship between SOC and financial health (n=435), finding that respondents with a higher SOC exhibited better overall financial health than respondents with a lower SOC. The present study is designed to address the research gaps indicated above in a more comprehensive sample.…”
