Purpose The purpose of this study is to investigate the Union of European Football Associations’s Financial Fair Play (FFP) Regulations in the context of the European football industry. This study seeks to explore whether these regulations are perceived by member organisations as contributing to the creation of a “poverty trap”. To do so, this study turns towards what are traditionally perceived as smaller clubs operating in smaller member associations and, in doing so, explores whether the regulations limiting benefactor payments are suitable for smaller leagues. Design/methodology/approach In-depth semi-structured interviews were conducted with key individuals involved in the management of Scottish football clubs. The Scottish context was chosen because of the disparity in revenues amongst competing teams and the limited broadcasting revenues achieved in comparison to some other European member associations. Findings FFP Regulations are perceived to be an effective tool for monitoring clubs and ensuring financial stability. However, the findings suggest that participants believe that these regulations consolidate the financial position of larger teams who rely on broadcasting and extant brand power for revenue generation. Further, smaller leagues demonstrate a lesser reliance on benefactor payments, and therefore, the restriction on benefactor payments inherent within FFP Regulations is posited by participants as holding little consequence and/or relevance within the Scottish football context. Originality/value Most prior studies on FFP Regulations have focused on generating quantitative insight into the application of FFP Regulations in large, resource-rich European football leagues. Through a qualitative approach, this study provides nascent exploratory insight into FFP Regulations from the perspective of smaller leagues.

Research question:We consider trading players' trading as one of the distinctive features of football clubs' business models and how these models have been influenced since the implementation of FFPR. Considering the Italian financial and economic context in the football sector, we investigate whether Serie A football clubs adopt earnings manipulation as a result of trading players' economic rights. Research methods: The empirical analysis includes the football clubs competing in the ItalianSerie A from 2005 to 2018. Our sample consists of an unbalanced panel dataset composed of 275 club-year observations (38 different clubs). Our estimations are run by using fixed effects OLS models. Clubs' net capital income from football players' sale are used as a proxy of earning manipulation. We control for clubs' football performance, size and reputation. Results and Findings:By applying Bartov's model based on asset sales, our results confirm that the adoption of asset manipulation behaviours in the football industry wherein players' economic right sales are a preponderant financial item affecting economic performance.Specifically, net income from players' trading is significant and positively linked with Serie A clubs' profitability, while leverage is significant after the introduction of FFPR and especially for the most blazoned Serie A clubs.Implications: Our results confirm that Italian Serie A has been chronically dependent on players' trading to maintain their financial sustainability. UEFA's regulations could be assessed and modified in order to enable them to prevent and reveal the real activities and dynamics behind the player transfer market (profit smoothing behaviours).

A professzionális labdarúgás üzleti és sportszakmai eredményei mentén elemezték a szerzők az UEFA egyes tagországainak az első osztályú bajnokságaiban érdekelt élklubok stratégiai mintázatait. Egy 54 labdarúgóklubból álló mintán a klubok teljesítményét három nagy dimenzió mentén vizsgálták meg, amelyek a következők: a pénzügyi teljesítmény, a pályán elért eredmények és az (emberi)erőforrás-gazdálkodás/átigazolási politika dimenziói. Hierarchikus klaszterelemzést végeztek el, amely alapján négy csoportba sorolták az egyes klubokat. Ez a négy klaszter a következő: 1. nemzetközi elit, 2. kihívók, 3. feltörekvő bajnokok, 4. versenyben maradásért küzdők. A kutatás fő eredménye, hogy az azonos klaszterbe tartozó sportvállalkozások hasonló mennyiségű jövedelmet állítanak elő, azonos mértékben sikeresek a hazai bajnokságban, és hasonló az átigazolási politikájuk, egymástól azonban markánsan eltérnek az egyes klaszterek.
