Farmer fertilization doses are generally insufficient compared to the recommended doses therefore causing low productivity of rice plants. This study aims to evaluate soil nutrient status to determine site-specific fertilization recommendations in Merigi Kelindang District, Central Bengkulu Regency. This study was carried out in February-April 2022 in Merigi Kelindang District, Central Bengkulu Regency, Bengkulu Province. Data was collected by taking composite soil samples at random after harvesting or before the first tillage. Determination of nutrient levels of N, P, K, and soil pH using the at Paddy Soil Test Kit. Data were analyzed descriptively comparatively. The results showed that the nutrient status of paddy fields in Merigi Kelindang District was low N 72%, medium N 14%, high N 7%, and very high 7%. P nutrient status was medium at 93% and low at 7%. High K nutrient status 100%. Meanwhile, pH status is acidic at 7% and slightly acidic at 93%. Recommendations for fertilizer usage in the Merigi Kelindang sub-district as follow; Urea 300 kg/ha for sandy soil (clay content < 20%) or 250 kg in clayey soil (clay content >20%); SP-36 fertilizer (100 kg/ha); KCl (50 kg/ha) without the use of paddy straw as compost and no KCL needed if 5 t/ha paddy straw compost used. Recommendations for soil management with a soil pH value of 5-6 (slightly acidic) are conventional drainage systems and the application of urea as N fertilizer.

The soils from four typical natural wetlands, namely, Phragmites australis, Tamarix chinensis, Suaeda salsa, and tidal flat, as well as reclaimed wetland, were selected to evaluate the soil quality in the Yellow River Delta. Fourteen soil physicochemical property indexes were employed to build a minimum data set (MDS). Combined with vegetation type and soil depth, the soil quality index (SQI) was conducted. A fuzzy logic model was applied for data normalization. The contrast test was conducted to verify the accuracy of the MDS. The results showed that the MDS consists of TOC, NO3--N, soil salinity, TS, TP, Mg, C/N and pH. The soil quality decreased from the inland to the coastline and from reclaimed wetland to tidal flat with the change of vegetation type. The soil quality of 0–10 cm soil depth was better than that of 20–30 cm soil depth. The soil qualities of reclaimed land were significantly better than those of natural wetlands at the same soil depth. Correlation analysis results showed that agricultural reclamation has become an important factor of soil quality change in the study area. Comparative results of two methods of MDS and the total data set (TDS) testified that the method of MDS was credible and accurate for soil quality assessment of the study area. Our results indicated that wetland protection and agricultural reclamation in coastal areas should keep a rational balance.

Rice self-sufficiency is central to Indonesia’s agricultural development, but the country is increasingly challenged by population growth, climate change, and arable land scarcity. Agroecological nutrient management offers solutions though optimized fertilization, enhanced organic matter and biofertilizer utilizations, and improved farming systems and water management. Besides providing enough nutrients for crops, the agroecological approach also enhances resilience to climate change, reduces the intensity of greenhouse gas emissions, and improves the biological functions of rice soil. Organic and bio fertilizers can reduce the need for chemical fertilizers. For example, blue-green algae may contribute 30–40 kg N ha−1, while the application of phosphate solubilizing microbes can reduce the use of chemical phosphorous fertilizers by up to 50 percent. The country currently experiences substantial yield gaps of about 37 percent in irrigated and 48 percent in rain-fed rice. Achieving self-sufficiency requires that Indonesia accelerates annual yield growth through agroecological nutrient management from a historical 40 kg ha−1 year−1 to 74 kg ha−1 year−1. The aim is to raise the average yield from the current 5.2 t ha−1 year−1 to 7.3 t ha−1 year−1 by 2050. Simultaneously, controlling paddy field conversion to a maximum of 30,000 hectares per year is crucial. This strategic approach anticipates Indonesia’s milled rice production to reach around 40 million metric tonnes (Mt) by 2050, with an expected surplus of about 4 Mt.
