Abstract: Nonlethal sampling is becoming a common method to diagnose fish diseases, especially with the availability of molecular testing. Viral hemorrhagic septicemia virus (VHSV) is a viral pathogen of finfish distributed worldwide. Such a design would require a non-lethal sampling technique (Cornwell et al, 2013) that was not available during the time this study took place. “…Cultured populations of these species were available that underwent annual fish health inspections (American Fisheries Society 2010) and had been consistently found to be free of VHSV as well as other important fish pathogens. Cornwell et al (2013) demonstrated VHSV-infected Fathead Minnow fin or gill samples tested alone by quantitative reverse transcriptase polymerase chain reaction (qRT-PCR) were equally as sensitive as a pooled organ-sample cultured for viral detection. Their results suggested that nonlethal fin or gill biopsies can be used to study the infection dynamics of VHSV IVb in fish.…”
