This research is motivated by the fact that learning is still centered on the use of textbooks, causing students to be less interested in participating in learning, which affects students understanding, still confused in determining the location of the main ideas. The purpose of this research is to (1) explain the feasibility animated video Getting to Know the Main Ideas for fifth grade elementary school students, (2) determine the magnitude of the influence animated video Getting to Know the Main Ideas on the ability to determine the main ideas, and (3) analyze teacher and student assessments of the video animation Getting to Know the Main Ideas. The research method used is research and development with the ADDIE development model, namely Analysis, Design, Development, Implementation and Evaluation. Implemented for fifth grade elementary school students and teachers. Product feasibility was obtained from the validation with a feasibility percentage from material experts of 95% and a feasibility percentage from media experts of 78.4%. The magnitude of the effect was analyzed from the pretest and posttest results which were calculated using the paired samples test, showing a significance value of 0.000, less than 0.05. The product assessment results by teachers and students are in the range of 81-100% with very good criteria. Thus, the animated video Getting to Know the Main Ideas is suitable for use for learning, has a significant influence on the ability to determine the main ideas, and received a very good response from teachers and fifth grade elementary school students.

The use of films in the teaching of English as a foreign language: a systematic literature review

Background Especially over the last decades, the use of cinema in the English as a foreign language (EFL) class has been gaining momentum. Although this interest has resulted in a complex body of research, no review to date had aimed to systematically map out (i) the pedagogical guidelines available for English teachers to implement films in class; (ii) the perceptions of EFL teachers and learners on the educational use of films; and (iii) the impact of cinema-based EFL on students’ learning, pertinent aspects as they contribute to deactivate instructors’ reported reluctance to use films as a proper teaching material. Thus, a systematic literature review has been conducted along the three previously-mentioned research questions with the aim of highlighting in a comprehensive manner the robust pedagogical value of cinema in EFL contexts. Methods A systematic search was carried out in Web of Science, ERIC, MLA International Bibliography, Education Database, and Scopus, which were last consulted on 2 December, 2022. Inclusion and exclusion criteria were applied, which covered journal papers written in English, peer-reviewed, published in open-access, and focusing on the exploitation of films for the teaching of English as a foreign language. Following the search and selection stages, a coding scheme was established, and the authors conducted a thematically based qualitative analysis to answer the research questions. Reliability was tested to check the agreement rate among the researchers. Findings Of the 416 sources found, 44 were eligible. Twenty-five percent of the selected references consist of theoretical or practical methodological orientations for the implementation of films in the EFL class, 16% of the sources explore EFL teachers’ and students’ perceptions on the educational use of films, and the remaining 59% of the references tap into the impact of cinema-based EFL on students’ learning. The results revealed that more informed guidelines on the exploitation of this resource are needed, that both instructors and teachers have a great attitude towards this method, and that films provide EFL learners with linguistic, intercultural, and motivational benefits. Interpretation On a general note, scholars have adopted a narrow focus when exploring cinema-based English teaching since they only address some of its benefits and they have mostly concentrated on the University educational context. Specific research gaps are highlighted in relation to each research question, and avenues for further research are proposed. Finally, pedagogical implications for the educational use of cinema in the English class are provided.

Exploring ways of learning foreign language grammar using video content in secondary education is relevant because most research focuses on other educational levels and rarely takes into account student and teacher assessments. In addition, the vast majority of studies deal with the theoretical aspects of foreign language grammar learning at school. Accordingly, there is a need for empirical studies that focus more on secondary education and the nature of teachers and students' perceptions of such issues. This determined the relevance of the article. The aim of the study is to establish the effectiveness of the use of audiovisual materials as a tool for learning a foreign language. As a result, was determined the assessment of teachers and students' feasibility of introducing video content in the process of learning grammar of a foreign (English) language. The main methods in the study were methods of experiment and interviewing; also, the method of questioning was used. The main hypothesis is that the introduction of video content as teaching material for learning foreign languages is an effective method of teaching, positively evaluated by all participants in the educational process. The results of the study show that the introduction of films as teaching material in the educational process contributes to the teacher's willingness to use video content for their lessons, the understanding of all participants in the educational process of the benefits of using audio-visual materials is improved; the performance increases. Increasing the level of methodological skill and awareness gained through personal experience encourages improvement of the learning process, awareness of the need to use the completely rich arsenal of modern methods and forms of language teaching. In the future perspective is the study that the use of audio-visual content as didactic material is not only a means of learning a language, but also a factor in improving critical thinking skills, a sense of social justice, awareness of art, in particular, history of the culture.
