“…Ultrasonic activation was carried out through a straight ultrasonic tip once the root canals were fully irrigated with 2.5% sodium hypochlorite and in conjunction with a reduced-power (20%) ultrasonic platform for 3 x 20s cycles. The results of this study, post-analysis of the level of GP remnants left upon root canal walls, demonstrated that the combinatory use of passive ultrasonic irrigation and Protaper or Reciproc systems were more effective than single-method approaches for GP removal (Gomes et al, 2017).…”

“…The use of ultrasonic tips for retreatment is reserved chiefly for stiff pastes/types of cement (Patel, 2016). However, the first study analysing the use of ultrasonic-based irrigation in conjunction with other GP removal methodologies, such as ProTaper or Reciproc, was described in 2017 by Gomes and colleagues (Gomes et al, 2017). This investigation probed the effectiveness of four different techniques -ProTaper alone, ProTaper + passive ultrasonic irrigation, Reciproc alone, and Reciproc + passive ultrasonic irrigationin removing GP from a total of 40 maxillary molars previously treated with root canal preparation/obturation.…”

“…Passive ultrasonic irrigation (PUI) is one of the most studied approaches for activating irrigating solutions in the literature and is based on a passive ultrasonic tip vibrating at ultrasonic frequency inside the root canal with an irrigation solution. Despite controversial results, most studies indicate better performances in the addition of this resource for removing filling materials remnants after initial bulk removal with NiTi preparation systems (Bueno et al, 2017;Gomes et al, 2017;Castro et al, 2018;Silveira et al, 2018;Crozeta et al, 2020). The influence of PUI on the outcome of secondary treatment is still unknown, the only study published on the subject to date is a retrospective clinical study that found higher survival rates in retreatments associated with PUI (Bartols et al, 2020).…”

“…Furthermore, another study concluded that mechanized systems cannot replace manual instrumentation, and that in comparison to other systems, it was not associated with iatrogenic errors (47) . Gomes et al (40) evaluated the effectiveness and the duration of obturation removal from a root canal with ProTaper and Reciproc with Passive Ultrasonic Irrigation (PUI), which was conducted with sodium hypochlorite for one minute. There were no significant differences regarding the obturation removal percentage from the root canal.…”

“…It includes nickel-titanium instruments with M-Wire alloy, which are more resistant to cyclic fatigue, torsional fatigue, have greater flexibility, and lower extrusion of debris than conventional alloys and continuous systems. It has a more effective performance than other reciprocating systems like WaveOne while maintaining the centrality of the root canal (13,17,(39)(40)(41) . One of the main advantages of reciprocating systems compared to other systems is the greater resistance to cyclic and torsional fatigue (12,20,42,43) .…”
