Abstract

Abstractto a sphere of radius 4/k; the structures can therefore be described as stacks of 'complex spheres', omitting orientations or chiralities of the complex ions in order to consider only the steric problems. Thus it can be shown that the structural arrangements of these 25 compounds are reduced to five simple models, independent of their symmetry or crystallographic cells: cubic close packing, hexagonal close packing, distorted hexagonal close packing, body-centred cubic, and a more complex model named pentagonal. This classification is based on the number of nearestneighbour complexes surrounding one [M(en)3] 3÷ ion. There is also a correlation between the observed packing and the X ion size.
