Fighting COVID-19: Integrated Micro- and Nanosystems for Viral Infection Diagnostics

Abstract: The pandemic of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) highlights the importance of rapid and sensitive diagnostics of viral infection that enables the efficient tracing of cases and the implementation of public health measures for disease containment. The immediate actions from both academia and industry have led to the development of many COVID-19 diagnostic systems that have secured fast-track regulatory approvals and have been serving our healthcare frontlines since the early stage of the pandemic. On diagnos… Show more

“…In short, they are able to perform many laborious benchtop protocols without human applications in clinical diagnostics and low-cost mass production. LOC-based techniques are widely used for viral detection in clinical applications like in the cases of Ebola, dengue fever hepatitis and Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) as well other cases [ (26) , (27) , (28) ]. The LOC concept has been expanded using different types of configurations called LionX systems adopting miniaturized fluidic manipulation platforms and automated virus detection.…”

“…The LOC concept has been expanded using different types of configurations called LionX systems adopting miniaturized fluidic manipulation platforms and automated virus detection. As an example LOC-related platforms are depicted in Figure 1 and include Lab-in-a Tube, Lab-in-a Box and even Lab on-a-Drone systems among others [ 28 ].

“…Also the extractions kits are less than the ramping up demand of tests [ 26 ]. During transportation, the denaturation of sample may occur which leads to false negative results [ 27 ]. In case of fully recovered patients, PCR testing can even result false positive outcome detecting genetic material of inactive SARS-CoV-2 which is actually not reinfection.…”
