Fighting against Vampire Appliances through Eco-Aware Things

Abstract: This paper provides an overview of how Internetconnected objects can lead to a social change towards energyefficiency in areas where people inhabit (cities, buildings or homes). For this aim it is proposed the use of social networks, like Twitter, as an interaction and communication channel between smart objects and human beings. The presented work demonstrates, by means of an experiment, how an augmented everyday object, i.e. a capsule-based coffee machine, may help to reduce the unnecessary consumed energy i… Show more

“…As it was explained in [23], these modes are randomly detected with no rationale during a work-day in our laboratory due to the variety of hot beverages, consumer preferences and time to prepare a drink. The non-existent information about how use the coffee machine energy efficiently causes users indifference (i.e.…”

“…ITU Internet Reports" report published by the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) in 2005, the concept of "Internet of Things" were announced (ITU, 2005). However, the first Internet of Things application in history was used by a group of academics at the University of Cambridge in 1991 by sharing images of a coffee machine with a camera system over the Internet (Armentia et al, 2012). This expansion of the Internet leads to the emergence of new paradigms, and in this context, the Internet of Things, one of the new paradigms, is one of the hottest and most curious topics in information and communication technology today (Lee,et al, 2013).…”

“…The goal of using this type of element as a means to create smart spaces is to ensure an optimal level of confidence and acceptance of ambient intelligence systems. Lopez-de-Armentia et al [ 19 ] provide an example of how an everyday smart object, such as a coffee maker, can bring about social change towards energy efficiency.…”
