Fifty years of development of light measurement instrumentation

Abstract: Instrumentation for photometry, radiometry and colorimetry has developed significantly over the past fifty years. New measurement techniques and types of detectors as well as miniaturisation of computers and electronic hardware have fundamentally changed both the size, design and complexity of instrumentation and the way that we go about our measurement work. There has also been a significant change in mindset as the increasing need for accountability for measurement results and recognition of the role of trac… Show more

“…To celebrate its 50th birthday, LRT released a special issue to introduce the achievements of multiple subareas of lighting research, 5 including non-visual effects of light, 6 light measurement instrumentation, 7 architectural lighting design, 8 CIE colour appearance models, 9 daylighting in buildings, 10 light controls, 11 road lighting, 12 vision 13 and visual discomfort. 14 In 1998, Marsden listed papers published in LRT which had won the Leon Gaster awards and Walsh-Weston awards and selected the top 20 papers published during the first 30 years since LRT's inception 15 and Cannon-Brookes et al .…”

“…With the calibrated luminance camera that was used in the experiments, this condition is automatically assured. However, also with other (cheaper) cameras this should be possible [22,23].…”
