Fifteen Years' Experience of the Brazilian Osteosarcoma Treatment Group (BOTG): A Contribution from an Emerging Country

Abstract: We report on the outcome of three consecutive studies for the treatment of osteosarcoma carried out in Brazil over 15 years. Although the survival rates presented are below those reported in current literature, it represents the result of a favorable experience gathered from the national collaborative work.

“…Nine of the 35 Mexican American patients were preadolescents at diagnosis and to the best of our knowledge this is the largest series composed of such patients. In this study, the 5-year EFS of 48% was similar to results from the Brazilian Osteosarcoma Treatment Group who reported a 5-year EFS of only 53% 5. In this cohort, the 5-year EFS was inferior to a smaller study completed on patients in low-income countries in Latin America 6.…”

“…With the implementation of specialized centers capable of treating children with bone cancers across the country, less people move from their homes to receive treatment. Moreover, the Brazilian Osteosarcoma Treatment Group (BOTG) and the Brazilian Collaborative Study Group for the Treatment of Ewing Sarcoma Family Tumors (EWING1) have been collaborating to improve diagnosis and treatment (14,15). Considering the size of Brazilian population, for children and AYA, we would expect 360 and 180 new cases of OS and ES, respectively, per year.…”

“…3,19 . In addition, the studied group presented characteristics similar to those reported in the BOTG V and GCBTO 2006 studies, with a high prevalence of metastasis and a survival rate of approximately 55% 19 . Survival rates for metastases, recurrence, and gender (male) followed the pattern and approximate values found in other studies, although they were not statistically significant (probably due to the small sample size) 3,19 .…”
