Fifteen new species of Penicillium

Abstract: We introduce 15 new species of Penicillium isolated from a diverse range of locations, including Canada, Costa Rica, Germany, Italy, New Zealand, Tanzania, USA and the Dry Valleys of Antarctica, from a variety of habitats, including leaf surfaces in tropical rain forests, soil eaten by chimpanzees, infrabuccal pockets of carpenter ants, intestinal contents of caterpillars and soil. The new species are classified in sections Aspergilloides (1), Canescentia (2), Charlesia (1), Exilicaulis (3), Lanata-Divaricata … Show more

“…Conidia of P. globosum are smooth‐walled in contrast to the rough‐walled conidia of P. cataractum . Penicillium globosum grows more slowly on both CYA at 25 °C (21–22 mm vs. 34–42 mm) and YES at 25 °C (17–19 mm vs. 45–60 mm) than P. cataractum (Visagie et al., ). A PHI test revealed no significant recombination event between P. globosum and P. cataractum (Φw = 1).…”

“…Thermocycler programs used for amplification followed Samson et al (2014) and employed primer pairs V9G & LS266 (ITS; (de Hoog and Gerrits van den Ende 1998; Masclaux et al 1995), Bt2a & Bt2b (BenA;(Glass and Donaldson 1995)), CF1 & CF4 or sometimes CMD5 & CMD6 (CaM; (Hong et al 2006;Peterson et al 2005)) and 5F & 7CR (RPB2; (Liu et al 1999)). Sequencing was done as described in Visagie et al (2016). Contigs were assembled in Geneious v. 8.1.8 (Biomatters Ltd, New Zealand) and newly generated sequences submitted to GenBank.…”

“…Endophytic Penicillium species are convincingly reported in some studies and it is likely that some species are functional components of niche ecosystems and not simply incidental contaminants (Peterson et al 2003, Peterson et al 2005, Vega et al 2006, Visagie et al 2016.…”
