Fifteen microsatellite markers for the stripe-necked terrapin Mauremys caspica (Testudines: Geoemydidae) and cross-amplification tests in M. rivulata

Abstract: We describe the first 15 microsatellite loci for Mauremys caspica. Thirteen of them were polymorphic with 2-5 alleles per locus, an expected heterozygosity between 0.21 and 0.71, and an observed heterozygosity between 0.24 and 0.88. Cross-species amplification in M. rivulata was successful at 14 loci, with 2-17 alleles per locus, an expected heterozygosity between 0.361 and 0.916, and an observed heterozygosity between 0.333 and 1.000. These microsatellites are expected to be useful for studying population gen… Show more

“…Besides the mitochondrial cyt b gene, we use 14 rapidly evolving microsatellite loci (Vamberger et al 2011) to achieve a better understanding of the phylogeography and population structuring of M. caspica. In particular, we re-assess the status of the critically endangered Arabian populations.…”

“…Therefore, we re‐examine in the present paper geographically correlated genetic variation within M. rivulata based on a rangewide sampling and length polymorphisms of 13 unlinked microsatellite loci (Vamberger et al . ) and compare this information with the mitochondrial differentiation pattern using the cyt b gene. For doing so, we expand the sampling of the two previous studies (Mantziou et al .…”

“…Each sample was genotyped at 13 unlinked microsatellite loci as characterized by Vamberger et al . (), and the cytochrome b gene (cyt b ) was sequenced as a mitochondrial marker. As microsatellites are known to detect only recent hybrid and backcross generations (Sanz et al .…”
