Fifteen days are enough to estimate home-range size in some long-lived resident eagles

Abstract: In this paper we show how many fixes are enough to define the territory of two long-lived resident raptors marked by GPS transmitters. To this end, we analyzed high-resolution GPS data from 50 territorial Bonelli's eagles (Aquila fasciata) and 9 territorial Golden eagles (Aquila chrysaetos) equipped with GPS/GSM dataloggers. Our results show that between 2200 and 2800 fixes are enough to define the territory. This is interesting for movement ecology works where long-term GPS data series are not available.

“…We trapped adults in the framework of an ongoing GPS tracking project aimed at studying mortality risks and eagles’ ranging behaviour in eastern Spain (more details in [ 28 , 29 , 30 , 31 ]). Adults were trapped from June to December during 2015–2022.…”

“…Once trapped, adults were measured, weighted and fitted with a GPS/GSM datalogger in a backpack configuration. This procedure took a maximum time of 30 to 40 min (more details in [ 28 , 29 , 30 ]).…”

“…We used the daily individual K50%, K75% and K95% isopleths computed with the whole tracked period from the following day after tagging to the end day of data transmission (e.g. animal's death, end of transmission), knowing that 15 days is the minimum tracking period to obtain a complete home-range (Morollón et al 2022).…”

“…In particular, since 2000, the Bonelli's eagle population has suffered a decline of 48.6% in the region, with an observed reduction of the breeding population from 31 territories occupied in 2000 to 18 occupied in 2022 39,40 . Specifically, in the south of this geographical region, video surveillance cameras were installed by the regional government in the latest two breeding seasons, in an area of high adult mortality 41 and where the recreational use of the environment for leisure activities has increased significantly in recent years, which has resulted in a significant increase in disturbance to wildlife in general and the endangered Bonelli's eagle in particular 42 .Since the year 2000, I have been collecting an annual monitoring database of the Bonelli's eagle population in the study area in which information on occupation, breeding performance and demographic parameters is systematically collected thanks to the combination of field monitoring techniques, bird ringing and telemetry information 39,[41][42][43] . Taking advantage of this long-term database, the objective of this work is to analyse the variation in the reproductive parameters of the Bonelli's eagle through a before-and-after control-impact (BACI) methodology 44,45 in territories in which video surveillance cameras were installed and in control territories monitored by field observation throughout the 23-years study period.…”
