Fieldwork protocol as a safety inventory tool in public places

Abstract: This study reports on experiences using fieldwork protocols (FPs) in guiding the inventory of safety conditions in public places. Relying on theories of environmental criminology, situational crime prevention, and crime prevention through environmental design (CPTED), FPs are used to collect data on-site for three different types of public places: subway stations, shopping centers and parks. The fieldwork data are compared with other data sources and mapped using geographical information system (GIS) technolog… Show more

“…There are issues of data validity, reliability, and generalizability that should be considered. Validity regards how well media archives capture and measures the intended data (in this case CAAP), while reliability indicates the consistency of the captured data (Ceccato, 2019;Kelley, 1972). The reliability of media archives could in certain aspects be considered relatively high, as the nature of archiving implies a high ability to reproduce the results, provided the choice of keywords and time period are identical.…”

“…Previous studies Several studies have explored concerns for personal safety at third places such as recreation centres (Turkseven-Dogrusoy and Zengel, 2017;Odufuwa et al, 2019), shopping centres Ceccato and Tcacencu, 2018; among others places. As well, there are number of studies on public transport places (Cozens et al, 2003a(Cozens et al, , 2003b(Cozens et al, , 2004Delbosc and Currie, 2012;Ibrahim et al, 2013;Dunckel-Graglia, 2013;Dragu et al, 2013;Cozens, 2015;Ceccato, , 2019Ceccato and Paz1, 2015;Abenoza1 et al, 2018). Much of this research attempts to analyse why crime occurs at public transport nodes and to suggest possible ways to reduce and/or prevent crime in this people's place.…”

“…Therefore, a public place can take a variety of forms and shapes. It can be a public park open for all; a station, where many people pass by but may be restricted at certain hours of the day or a hermetic shopping centre that is public but not publicly owned, which means that not all parts are accessible to all (Ceccato, 2019). Thus, transport environments are important public places in urban centres.…”

“…The final contribution makes use of data coming from social media to describe fear in cyberspace. In the digital age, "eyes" are complemented by technologies such as smartphones, "apps," or body-worn cameras, giving expression to new ways of depicting what happens in public space (Ceccato, 2019;Gibson, 2014). In this book, this chapter goes beyond the concrete, tangible arenas such as parks and streets and is devoted instead to virtual public places.…”

“…For example, according to Eck (2019), place managers are important because they can exercise control over users and in doing so contribute to the safety of the public space. Nowadays, "eyes" can be complemented by technologies that give expression to new ways of depicting what happens in public places, from surveillance to sousveillance (see Ceccato, 2019 and in this book, part "The metrics").…”
