Field Tests on Eco-Friendly Railway Precast Concrete Slab

Abstract: This study focuses on evaluating the field performance of a newly developed eco-friendly precast concrete slab track structure for railway/subway systems in Seoul, South Korea. Although Ballasted railway track structures are one of the most common track structures in the railway industry, they have some drawbacks including higher maintenance cost, un-uniform supports, and a high level of noise and vibration. However, a ballastless (slab-based) track structure system requires less maintenance and uniform suppor… Show more

“…In railway engineering, the ballasted track system with concrete sleeper is the major type that is generally used in conventional lines. However, the biggest drawbacks of this system are insufficient ballast depth and ballast fouling that causes the degradation of the track as well as affecting the drainage capacity of the track [1][2][3]. Moreover, the maintenance cost of the ballasted track is also mentioned as a limitation when operating this system.…”

“…The track degradation's main causes are ballast fouling and insufficient depth of ballast [2]. Therefore, it is necessary to develop and research a non-destructive method such as ground penetrating radar (GPR) to limit these problems because the capacity of drainage in railway infrastructure is highly dependent on the fouled ballast [3]. Compared to the ballasted track, the non-ballasted or slab track has lower maintenance cost.…”
