Field tests of wind turbines submitted to real voltage dips under the new Spanish grid code requirements

Abstract: This paper adds the new Spanish grid code to the previously published works about the comparison of international regulations for connection of wind turbines to the network. All the electrical magnitudes—currents and active and reactive power—regulated in the Spanish grid code are studied when the wind turbines are submitted to real voltage dips. Because grid codes and, specifically, the Spanish grid code do not fix the reactive power definition to be applied, four definitions commonly used have also been stud… Show more

“…In a specific manner, the German grid code can be considered the most important driving document regulating the connection of wind farms and PV installations to the grid [18,27]. In Spain, the requirements for measuring and evaluating the response of PV power plants under voltage dips is defined following the Operational Procedure 12.3 of wind farm response under the presence of voltage dips (PVVC) [28][29][30]. Specifically, the 10th Edition -Annex III of this Operational Procedure -is devoted to PV power plants, where the certification and validation under the PVVC is discussed in detail.…”

“…Wind power generators must win voltage dips and restore RMS-values and frequency of voltage network, supplying reactive powers and currents to the electric network during the disturbance. New Spanish grid code requirements [1], [16] specify maximum consumptions of reactive power and current when a sudden voltage disturbance is presented at a wind farm. However, Spanish grid code does not specify which reactive power definition must be used and thus several formulations of reactive power and current could be used at this moment for verifying grid code requirements.…”

“…These are commonly referred to as the fault ride-through specifications. Specifically, national grid codes are requiring uninterrupted generation throughout power system disturbances supporting the network voltage and frequency, and therefore, extending characteristics such as low voltage ride through, or reactive and active power capabilities, [9], [10]. In [9]- [13] grid connection requirements in Spain, Denmark, Germany, Ireland, Sweden and Scotland are studied.…”
