Field survey on types of organic solvents used in enterprises of various sizes

Abstract: Solvent levels were about five times higher in small enterprises as compared with the levels in large enterprises. There was a gradual shift in solvent use from aromatics to other solvents, typically alcohols. The use of hexane in adhesives was reduced. Solvent levels were relatively high in solvent-drying and printing workplaces and low in degreasing/cleaning/wiping workplaces and testing/research laboratories.

“…and Kumai et al 10) were different from those in other studies 11,13,14) (including the present study) in the sense that direct injection (into a gas-chromatograph) of the homogeneous preparations (such as thinners and degreasers) was employed by Inoue et al 9) , and headspace air in vessels containing heterogeneous preparations (e.g., inks and paints) was analyzed by Kumai et al 10) for solvent component analyses. The use of solvents as a mixture has been a typical pattern of solvent use in various industries.…”

“…The target solvents were Group 1 (7 types) and Group 2 (40 types) solvents as prescribed in the Ordinance for Prevention of Organic Solvent Poisoning (Table 1 19,20) ), similar to the previous publications [11][12][13][14] ; Group 3 solvents were not measured as they are natural solvent mixtures 11,14) . The methods of workroom air sampling (by the Tedlar bag method) and instrumental analyses (by capillary gas-chromatography) were in accordance with regulatory standards, as previously described in details 11,14) .…”

“…The methods of sampling (with Tedlar bags) and analyses (by capillary gaschromatography) were as previously detailed elsewhere [1][2][3]6) . Group 3 solvents were not taken into account, as they are natural solvent mixtures and do not fit with the gaschromatographic identification 11,13) .…”
