Field-scale spatial correlation between contents of iron oxides and CO2 emission in an Oxisol cultivated with sugarcane

Abstract: ABSTRACT:Soil CO 2 emission (FCO 2 ) is one of the main sources of carbon release into the atmosphere. Moreover, FCO 2 is related to soil attributes governing the transfer of gases from soil to the atmosphere. This study aimed firstly to describe the spatial variability of hematite (Hm), goethite (Gt), iron extracted with sodium dithionite-citrate-bicarbonate (Fe d ) contents, soil CO 2 emission (FCO 2 ) and free-water porosity (FWP) and secondly, to develop statistical models to predict the above mentioned fa… Show more

“…BC provided favoring conditions to the neo-formation of ferromagnetic minerals, since soil is subjected to high temperatures during the burning of sugarcane, in preharvest. Mineral neo-formation after burning has also been reported by other authors in natural and cropped environments (TORRENT; BARRÓN, 2010;LIU et al, 2012;BAHIA et al, 2015). Greater magnetic values may refer to presence of mineral coal (biochar) in soil, which affect electrochemical changes (SPOKAS et al, 2015).…”

“…hematite and goethite) into ferromagnetic minerals with higher magnetic expression (TORRENT; BARRÓN, 2010;LIU et al, 2012;BAHIA et al, 2015). Crop burning effect on soil genesis can be observed through significant values of MS in different soil fractions, mainly at clay fraction, in BC environment.…”

“…2014;Zhang et al, 2015). In this respect, in case of sugarcane crop grown areas, studies have also revealed positive results (Luca et al, 2008;Panosso et al, 2009;Figueiredo et al, 2010;Bicalho et al, 2014;Bahia et al, 2015). A recent study had reported that sugarcane crop cover and tillage at a minimum level forms a strong and efficient approach in mitigating the CO 2 emissions emitted from soil (Farhate et al, 2018).…”

“…However, to our knowledge, no studies can be found in the literature comparing soil CO 2 emission under the cultivation of different sugarcane cultivars. In fact, the existing studies are limited to assess soil CO 2 emissions in areas with a single cultivar (Luca et al 2008;Panosso et al 2009;Figueiredo et al 2010;Teixeira et al 2011;Bicalho et al 2014;Bahia et al 2015).…”
