Field Scale Patterns of Soil Water Storage From Non-Contacting Measurements of Bulk Electrical Conductivity

Abstract: soil water storage (0-1.7 m) was measured every l0 m in a 660-m-long transect using a neutron probe and compared to bulk electrical conductivity, ECa, measurements obtained using noncontacting electomagnetic induction meters. Coherency analysis indicated a lack of correlation at scales less than 40 m. At scales greater than 40 m, ECo explained more than 8O7o of the variation of soil water storage. Measurement of ECo should be a simple and fast method of determining general field pafterns of soil water storage.

“…In hydropedological studies, EMI has been used to indirectly measure and characterize soil water content, subsurface flow, depth to water table, and soil drainage classes (Allred et al, 2005;Doolittle et al, 2000;Kachanoski et al, 1990;Khakural et al, 1998;Kravchenko et al, 2002;Robinson et al, 2008;Scanlon et al, 1999;Schumann and Zaman, 2003;Sheets and Hendrickx, 1995;Williams et al, 2006;Zhu et al, 2010aZhu et al, , 2010b. “…In two separate studies, Kachanoski et al (1988Kachanoski et al ( , 1990 found spatial variation in soil water stored within the top 0.5 and 1.7 m to be highly correlated with the spatial variation in bulk soil electrical conductivity measured with EMI meters (i.e. EM38 and EM31).…”

“…Electromagnetic induction can be used to indirectly estimate soil properties if the contributions of the other soil properties affecting the ECa measurement are known or can be estimated. Previous studies have shown that the controlling factor in some areas is clay content [8,9,10,11,12], salinity [13,14,15] and water content [16,17,18] and can include all three factors in different parts of a study area [19,20].…”
