Field‐scale monitoring test of aeration for enhancing biodegradation in an old landfill in China

Abstract: The field-scale test of aeration to accelerate biodegradation of the waste was conducted, which was selected in an old landfill in Hubei province in China. The long-term monitoring was presented, lasted for 11 months, to estimate the degradation stability of the landfill. The monitoring parameters included the temperature, COD and BOD of leachate, gas concentration, water level, settlement, and cellulose/lignin. The results show that the waste degradation rate was increased under the aeration condition, while … Show more

“…For example, when the temperature increases by more than 708C, the aeration system must be stopped to prevent explosion. This similar case happened in the Konstanz Dorfweiher Landfill in Germany and in the Yiling Landfill in China [18,23]. Gas concentration monitoring before restoration or end repair helps describe the effect of increased degradation.…”

“…When the air injection rate is high, the amplitude of rising temperature will increase. Air injection should be stopped to ensure landfill security when the temperature is higher than the critical 70°C . The injection rate is selected at a higher degree in major laboratory tests.…”

“…According to the world bank, the growth rate of MSW generation is much greater than the rate of urbanization, and MSW production has risen tenfold in the past century [5,6]. Hence, researchers have focused on how to accelerate biodegradation at the landfill sites to combat the crisis we face [7][8][9][10]. Some studies indicate that physical and chemical treatments could influence biodegradation and methane production of MSW [11][12][13], while others suggest that bacteria plays a crucial role in MSW biodegradation [14].…”
