Field records of painted apple moth (Teia anartoides Walker: Lepidoptera: Lymantriidae) on plants and inanimate objects in Auckland, New Zealand

Abstract: As part of an eradication program, field searches were conducted to verify the geographical extent of the painted apple moth (PAM; Teia anartoides Walker: Lepidoptera: Lymantriidae) incursion and to determine which plants were being attacked. Most PAM were found on the wattle species, in particular Paraserianthes lophanta and Acacia mearnsii. Other species with large numbers of PAM included the native Corynocarpus laevigatus (karaka) and Avicennia marina (grey mangrove). The large number of PAM on these New Ze… Show more

“…The successful eradication of painted apple moth T. anartoides from urban Auckland, New Zealand (1999‐2007) used a combination of ground and aerial Btk applications, ground applications of pyrethroids and chlorpyrifos, as well as hand collections of insects and SIT . Male removal was also effected during the delimitation programme, in which > 9300 males were trapped.…”

“…There have been eight peer-reviewed published studies on insects and spiders, including single species studies on the endemic obligate tortricid moth (Planotortrix avicenniae) [62] and the eriophyid mite (Aceria avicenniae) [63]. Other studies include the presence of the Asian paper wasp (Aceria avicenniae) [64], the scale insect (Ceroplastes sinensis) [65], invasive argentine ants (Linepthima humile) [66], and the painted apple moth (Teia anartoides) [67].…”

“…This moth was eventually eradicated in 1998 through repeated aerial applications of Bacillus thuringiensis kurstaki (formulated as Foray 48B). Almost immediately afterwards however, another lymantriid, the painted apple moth (Teia anartoides) was found in Glendene in Auckland (Stephens et al 2007). This eventually required up to 20 aerial applications of B. thuringiensis (again, formulated as Foray 48B) before eradication was achieved in an area of over 10,500 ha.…”
