Field Programmable Gate Array-Based Pulse-Width Modulation for Single Phase Active Power Filter

Abstract: Problem statement:The design and implementation of a sinusoidal Pulse-Width Modulation (PWM) generator for a single-phase hybrid power filter is presented. Approach: The PWM was developed in an Altera® Flex 10 K Field Programmable Gate Array (FPGA) and the modulation index was selected by calculating the DC bus voltage of the active filter through a digital controller, by Proportional-Integral-Derivative (PID) technique. Results: Experiment results showed the proposed active power filter topology to be capable… Show more

“…Thus, a FPGA can also be used to implement the control-logic design. FPGA are programmable semiconductor devices that are based around a matrix of configurable logic block (CLBs) connected via programmable interconnects as opposed to ASICs where the device is custom built for a particular design [4]. FPGA can be programmed to the desired application or functionality requirements.…”

“…With the advancement of various technical aspects of ASIC, three major categories have been developed: cell based integrated circuits (CBIC), gate arrays, and programmable logic devices (PLD) [19]. The field-programmable gate array (FPGA) is a new PLD developed by Xilinx, Inc. [20].…”

“…There are basically two PWM techniques -Analog and Digital Techniques. The disadvantages of these analog methods [2] and [3] are that, they are easily affected by noise and they change with respect to voltage and temperature. Digital methods are good for designing variable PWM signals.…”
