The preparation of high-strength saturated clay samples for large-scale model tests presents a significant challenge in geotechnical engineering. The slurry consolidation method has been conventionally employed to prepare saturated clay, despite its time-consuming and labor-intensive nature. Therefore, this study proposes a rapid preparation technique for clayey soils utilizing the dynamic compaction method, enabling the facile preparation of saturated clay samples by compacting the soils from an unsaturated state. During compaction, the void ratio decreases, thereby increasing the degree of saturation and enhancing the soil strength. Critical to this method are two variables: the moisture water content and the soil density, which are determined through bench-scale compaction tests using the Proctor compaction test apparatus. These tests establish the relationships between moisture content and density, degree of saturation, and soil strength. The moisture content aligning with the target soil strength is selected as the target moisture content for model-scale soil preparation, whereas the moisture content-density relationship sets the target density value. The laboratory tests validate that the soil strength of the saturated model-size clay samples prepared using the proposed method fulfills the requisite criteria, indicating its effectiveness for rapid preparation of high-strength saturated clay samples in large-scale model tests.

As the demand for eco-friendly energy increases, the offshore wind power generation sector is showing rapid growth. As offshore wind turbines become larger, the need for specialized installation vessels is becoming a more crucial issue. Wind turbine installation vessels (WTIV) require a necessary pre-loading process where the legs and spudcans are penetrated into the seabed to secure stability during installation. Due to these operational characteristics, the installation work can be completed safely when safe pre-loading is finished. Analyzing previous structural collapse accidents investigated by HSE, 53% of them were punch-through problems related to the seabed, which occurred with a high frequency. Therefore, these lead to major accidents, which is a very high-risk problem. In this study, we investigated and analyzed the punch-through accident cases, and a WTIV model with six legs was applied to numerically examine the maximum vertical reaction force variation when punch through occurs for each leg. The maximum vertical reaction force takes place in leg number three when a punch through occurs in leg number five and maximum stress exceeds the allowable criteria in both hull and legs. This requires proper structural reinforcement such as an increase in the thickness and change in the high-yield stress. The key results of this investigation can be used to determine the basic specifications of wind turbine installation vessels, and the reaction force distribution pattern can be used as fundamental data for leg and hull structural design.

Many offshore projects, such as offshore oil and gas exploration and offshore wind farm development, have required controlling the position of elevating the hull in a stable and balanced manner in recent years. The Jack-up Rig (JuR) jacking control systems are a revolutionary innovation that is already being employed in offshore drilling and other maritime structures. The system is utilized automatically to control and stabilize the position of the JuR during sea state disturbances to keep platforms from being displaced. As a result, developing an improved control theory for the Jacking system (JS) of a JuR is very important. In this paper, First, we investigate how to adapt to the effects of external forces and hydrodynamic amplification using a particle swarm optimization strategy based on a fuzzy controller. Then, using the fuzzy controller as the foundation, we proposed the PSO -Self Adaptive Fuzzy Controller (PSO-SAFC) guaranteed by Lyapunov criteria and compares it with other fuzzy-based algorithms to show the benefit of adaptively and stability of the system. To verify the proposed algorithm, embedded STM32F746VG central processor used to build the algorithm and run Simulink models on Matlab, the collected data on the positions of the legs and the tilt compared it to the setting command values to move the Rig body and provided control signals to the Drive system. Eventually, the advantages of the proposed approach are demonstrated by the simulation and experiment outcomes.
