“…The main subclinical problems encountered in endurance horses were respiratory problems followed by exercise-induced rhabdomyolysis, locomotor disturbance and cardiac arrhythmias. This is in accordance with previous studies on other sport horses in which respiratory and musculoskeletal problems were the most frequently diagnosed subclinical diseases (Martin and others 2000, van Erck and others 2006, Wilsher and others 2006, Richard and others 2010). The most useful tests to reveal subclinical diseases appear to be SETs (in the field or on the treadmill) with concurrent HR recordings during exercise and recovery, measurements of blood lactate concentrations and muscular enzymes, in combination with airway endoscopy and cytology of the collected respiratory samples.…”

“…Lameness and respiratory problems are the most common causes of poor racing performance (Martin et al 2000;van Erck et al 2006;Wilsher et al 2006). Martin et al (2000) also referred to post exercise arrhythmias and subclinical myopathy as causes of poor performance.…”

“…A field exercise test in Standardbreds can also be used to assess physiological or clinical limits to performance (Couroucé et al 1997(Couroucé et al , 1999Roneus et al 1999;Davie et al 2002;van Erck et al 2006).…”

“…A major limitation of these laboratory tests is the fact that they do not reflect exercise performed under genuine field conditions. Attempts have been made to measure V˙O 2 peak in the field in horses . Increased resistance to airflow induced by the masks required by the procedure renders the V˙O 2 peak measurements unreliable and presented unacceptable risks to the horses .…”

“…Attempts have been made to measure V˙O 2 peak in the field in horses . Increased resistance to airflow induced by the masks required by the procedure renders the V˙O 2 peak measurements unreliable and presented unacceptable risks to the horses . Recently a mask has been developed and validated that can accurately measure V˙O 2 peak, airflows, and tidal volumes on a breath‐by‐breath basis under field conditions .…”
