Field evaluation of flunixin meglumine in the supportive treatment of ovine mastitis

Abstract: Non-steroid anti-inflammatory agents are used in the treatment of bovine coliform mastitis, in order to reduce the severity of the clinical signs, to improve cure and to minimize the adverse effects of the disease (Lohuis et al., 1989;Morin et al., 1998). In ewes, similar findings have not been reported and consequently, the efficacy of these drugs in the treatment of ovine mastitis is not known. The objective of this study was the evaluation of flunixin meglumine (FINADYNE ® Schering-Plough) in the supportive… Show more

“…This supports their use alongside antimicrobials in treating inflammatory conditions such as footrot and mastitis, to aid recovery and reduce the associated pain. Within veterinary practice, sheep suffering from mastitis are more likely to receive an NSAID as part of their treatment as it can rapidly reduce clinical signs of mastitis (Fthenakis, 2000). There is some evidence to also support the use of NSAIDs when treating sheep with footrot; Welsh and Nolan (1995) administered an NSAID, flunixin meglumine, to sheep suffering from footrot.…”

“…Flunixin meglumine can contribute to improvement of clinical signs, particularly of the mammary gland, and to returning body temperatures to normal (Fthenakis, 2000). In severe cases of the disease, intravenous dextrose administration in combination with electrolytes has been advocated and should be continued until full recovery of the animal occurs .…”

“…Intravenous (IV) administration has demonstrated efficacy at reducing the pain and stress response of dehorning and surgical castration in calves [ 12 , 13 ] and improving lameness in steers and cows [ 14 , 15 ]. Flunixin has been used as a supportive treatment for ewes with clinical mastitis [ 16 ] and has effectively reduced surgical castration and tail docking pain in lambs [ 17 ].…”
