Field-emission characteristics from carbon nanotube field emitter arrays grown on silicon emitters

Abstract: The fluctuation of the emission current from carbon nanotube field emitter arrays (CNT FEAs) grown on silicon emitters was investigated as a function of total emission current and ambient pressure. The ratio of amplitude of short-term fluctuation ΔI and average emission current Iave strongly depended on Iave. The relationship ΔI/Iave∝Iave−1/2 was found. This relationship showed that the average emission current Iave is proportional to the number of active carbon nanotube emitters. The effect of vacuum pressure… Show more

“…We reported on the noise behavior of field electron emission current from carbon nanotube field emitter arrays. 7) The proportional relationship between ÁI=I ave and I À1=2 ave was found when the number of active emitters proportionally increased with the increase in the average emission current I ave . No average emission current I ave dependency of the fluctuation ratio ÁI=I ave was observed for the fabricated SiC cathode.…”

“…1-8 The FE behavior of CNTs is very important for real applications. [9][10][11] The intrinsic FE of singlewalled CNTs was found to follow the Fowler-Nordheim ͑FN͒ theory, although adsorption effects induced nonlinearity in the FN ͑ln I / V 2 -1 / V͒ curves and produced current saturation phenomena. 9,12 Although the FE of multiwalled CNTs ͑MWCNTs͒ has been studied thoroughly, [5][6][7][8][13][14][15][16] the explanation of the deviation of their FE from FN theory is still controversial.…”

“…The field enhancement factor β is given by, As the emission current increases, the number of active emitters increases and the fluctuation ratio is statistically expected to decrease. 22) Clearly, there is a correlation emission current and the number of active emitters. This result is considered to be consistent with that shown in Fig.…”
