Field efficacy of imidacloprid and Steinernema carpocapsae in a chitosan formulation against the red palm weevil Rhynchophorus ferrugineus (Coleoptera: Curculionidae) in Phoenix canariensis

Abstract: Both imidacloprid and S. carpocapsae in a chitosan formulation proved highly effective against R. ferrugineus in the field, and their efficacies did not significantly change when used in combination.

“…Larvae are the most destructive stage of the weevil as they can penetrate deep in the stem damaging its internal tissues. Up to three complete generations can take place inside one single adult palm (Abe et al, 2009;Dembilio et al, 2009b) and this process can take as long as one year. Only at the end of this period, external symptoms become obvious and the palm eventually dies.…”

“…While there are definite differences in behaviour between EPN species traditionally classified as ambushers and those classified as cruisers (e.g. nictation and jumping are expressed by "ambush" species), it is becoming increasingly clear that S. carpocapsae, an ambusher, can find and infect relatively immobile insects at considerable distances from the point of application (de Altube, Strauch, de Castro, & Pena, 2008;Dembilio, Llacer, de Altube, & Jacas, 2010;Dillon, Ward, Downes, & Griffin, 2006), prompting some to question the usefulness of the classification (Wilson, Ehlers, & Glazer, 2012).…”

“…Vuill, infecting eggs, larvae and adults (El-Sufty et al, 2009), Metarhizium anisopliae (Metchnikoff) Sorokin and Metarhizium pingshaense (Cito et al, 2014). B. bassiana is lethal to the primarily infected weevils and sublethal to other adults in contact with the infected individuals, by lowering their reproductive fitness (Dembilio et al, 2010a;Llacer et al, 2013). The RPG is found in association with some phoretic nematodes.…”
