Field efficacy of a new deltamethrin long lasting insecticidal net (LifeNet©) against wild pyrethroid-resistant Anopheles gambiae in Benin

Abstract: BackgroundMalaria vector control is mostly based on Long-Lasting Insecticidal Nets (LLIN). To date, all LLINs fully recommended by the World Health Organization Pesticide Scheme (WHOPES) are made of polyester or polyethylene. In this context, a new LLIN named LifeNet©, made of polypropylene fiber is developed. According to the manufacturer, LifeNet©is made of soft filament, has a greater mechanical strength, a superior insecticide wash resistance with a short insecticide regeneration time, a better flammabilit… Show more

“…There is a belief that these similarities may initiate some unknown interactions between insecticides from different sources, which may have a particularly large impact on disease vectors. A good example of this is a possible interaction between deltamethrin insecticides (a type 2 pyrethroid) used for controlling adult mosquitoes in urban residential areas 40 , and lambda-cyhalothrin insecticide, another Table 2. Concentrations of λ-cyhalothrin residues in Anopheles coluzzii breeding sites identified in Houeyiho, a farm using synthetic insecticide treatments.…”

“…The efficacy of the LifeNet® in experimental huts against free-flying wild mosquitoes was already evaluated under WHOPES supervision. Results of this evaluation showed that LifeNet® fulfilled WHOPES requirements for Long Lasting technology in Phase II [ 21 ].…”

“…Polyethylene nets are more resistant than polyester nets in general. However, they frequently require heat treatments or additional time for insecticide regeneration, and they are typically rough to touch, both of which contribute to lower acceptability [13]. LifeNet is the target LLIN brand used in this study.…”
