Field Application of the Autonomous Inflow Control Device AICD for Optimized Heavy Oil Production in South Sultanate of Oman

Abstract: This paper summarizes the results and learnings from the Autonomous Inflow Control Device (AICD) deployment and installation in multiple heavy oil fields in south Oman, allowing for swift utilization in other fields with similar characteristics. Those AICDs were mainly deployed and tested in those oil fields comprehensively, in horizontal producers, and the results were supported by rigorous lab tests was conducted to understand their behavior. This paper is a continuation of the work in reference [1]. … Show more

“…AICD prevents and controls water breakthrough in a diverse Western Offshore Field while producing maximum oil. AICD controls the flow of high permeability zones to balance fluid inflow along the wellbore length [18]. This will help produce a regular flow of fluids along the wellbore and minimize early water breakthroughs caused by high permeability zones and frictional effects producing water coming.…”

“…The highly diverse Western Offshore Field can now maximize oil production with the aid of AICD by effectively preventing and controlling water breakthrough. High permeability zones can contribute to an unbalanced input of fluids along the wellbore's length, however, AICD will effectively restrict their flow [53]. If fluids are constantly moving down the wellbore, water is less likely to condense in high-permeability areas and rush out the well before it is ready.…”
