Field Application and Performance Evaluation of Polymer Microsphere Profile Control in Low Permeability Oil Reservoir

Abstract: During the development of low permeability oil reservoirs in Changqing oilfield, the nonuniformity of injection profile is a commonly seen problem. Conventional profile control methods face the difficulty caused by hard injection and poor reservoir adaptability. Polymer microspheres (PMs) are considered to have good profile control capabilities due to their properties such as hydration swelling and plugging. Therefore, it is proposed to use PMs profile control method to improve the oil recovery in low permeabi… Show more

“…In this research process, two kinds of PMs are studied with the calibration diameter as 100 nm (PM100) and 800 nm (PM800) separately. These two kinds of microspheres have been applied in Changqing Oilfield with good performance . Also, according to the throat diameter and the particle size of these two kinds of PMs, the calculated matching coefficient is within the recommended matching coefficient range.…”

“…In this work, the resistance coefficient and blocking rate are calculated using eqs and . The retention rate of the PMs in the core is calculated using eq where F r is the resistance coefficient and η is the blocking rate; K w , K p , and K sw , respectively, represent the core permeability after WF, PMF, and SWF, μm 2 ; μW and μ P are the viscosity of water and the PM system, respectively, mPa·s; DPW and DPP represent the differential pressure of WF and PMF, respectively, MPa; Q w and Q p are the injection rate during WF and PMF, respectively, mL/min.…”

“…Among its many application fields, oil development is one of the most important application fields ( Kawaguchi, 2000 ; Raffa et al, 2016 ; Jia et al, 2019 ) because it has many excellent properties, such as stability, rheology, and self-similarity ( Kang et al, 2015 ; Yang et al, 2017 ). Among them, oilfield researchers are most concerned with properties such as the PMs particle size and its distribution.…”

“…After the near well is plugged, the subsequent injection water will flow around these areas and then return to the high-permeability channels (Zhou et al, 2017 ). A key component of the in-depth profile control technology of ultralow permeability oil reservoirs is to ensure that the agent can reach the deep part of the reservoir and effectively plug the high-permeability channels (Zhang and Zhou, 2008 ; Jia et al, 2019 ). However, this is impossible for most conventional profile control agents, as they usually cannot flow through the small pores and throat (Li et al, 1993 ; Tu and Wang, 2011 ).…”
