Fictional robots as a data source in HRI research: Exploring the link between science fiction and interactional expectations

Abstract: Because interacting with a robot is a novel experience for most adults, expectations about a robot's capabilities must come from sources other than past experiences. This paper explores the relationship between capabilities of robots portrayed in popular science fiction films and students' expectations about a real robot. A content analysis of 12 American science fiction films showed that fictional robots reliably display cognitive capabilities, but do not consistently exhibit many humanlike social behaviors. … Show more

“…Consequently, adolescents are less likely to accept a robot in a social role. Adolescents may also have higher expectations of the robot -not least because of unrealistic depictions of robots in popular science fiction (Dinet & Vivian, 2014;Kriz, Ferro, Damera, & Porter, 2010;Sundar, Waddell, & Jung, 2016) -which may lead to disappointment.…”

“…Rosie the robot from the 1960's television show, The Jetsons. However, even today there are still very few robots in the home due to the technical challenges and high expectations of such systems [11,24]. Thus, much of our existing knowledge is from short term studies that take place in laboratory settings limiting their impact.…”

“…Typically, people naive to social robots in terms of real world encounters, already have certain expectations on their functionalities based on fictional movies and stories. In reality though, there is a significant gap between the current state of robotics research and science fiction [20], and sometimes even advertisements for real robots that make use of artificial intelligence 1 . As a consequence, negative effects on the interaction quality have to be considered when violating the user's expectations on the robot [23].…”
