Fictional Inquiry—design collaboration in a shared narrative space

Abstract: In this paper we present Fictional Inquiry, a collaborative Participatory Design technique that provides an approach that allows designers to shape the context of collaborative design activities. Fictional Inquiry allows designers to address specific issues when inquiring into existing use practices, or exploring the future in the collaborative design process. Fictional Inquiry entails bypassing existing socio-cultural structures by creating partially fictional situations, artifacts, and narratives that mediat… Show more

“…For one, it would be useful to try out a range of different methods in order to create a methodological tool-set that is available to researchers. We also have yet to see how concepts from Participatory Design methods, such as narrative framing [10], temporal displacement [43] or the metaphor of magic [29] might transfer to participatory evaluation. Finally, our approach requires intimate knowledge of one child's abilities, interests and favourite activities.…”

“…Dindler e Iversen (2007) proponen una técnica específica de diseño colaborativo denominada "indagación ficticia" que ha mostrado ser muy efectiva trabajando con niños y con familias para moldear actividades de cocreación. La idea general es crear situaciones, escenarios y artefactos parcialmente ficticios, a través de una narrativa compartida, para propiciar que los participantes imaginen futuros deseados.…”

“…"We use the term 'aesthetic' in the pragmatist sense, as a profoundly meaningful transformation that provides a refreshed attitude towards the practices of everyday life, and as a change in our modes of perceiving and acting in the world." [32] They understand Participatory Design in the way Ehn [39] coined it:"as the relation between tradition and transcendence; the tension between understanding and appreciating the existing, on the one hand, and on the other hand, the creation of new knowledge and practice." Aesthetic Inquiry is then "tipping the scale towards transcendence" [32] through the introduction of so-called Transcendent elements and Anchoring elements.…”
