Electronic Support Groups, Patient-Consumers, and Medicalization: The Case of Contested Illness

This article illustrates the role electronic support groups play in consumer-driven medicalization. The analysis is based on an observational study of a year in the life of an electronic support group for sufferers of the contested illness fibromyalgia syndrome. The analysis builds on and extends scholarship concerning the growing influence of lay expertise in the context of medical uncertainty by showing how the dominant beliefs and routine practices of this electronic community simultaneously (and paradoxically) challenge the expertise of physicians and encourage the expansion of medicine's jurisdiction. Drawing on their shared embodied expertise, participants confirm the medical character of their problem and its remedy, and they empower each other to search for physicians who will recognize and treat their condition accordingly. Physician compliance is introduced as a useful concept for understanding the relationship between lay expertise, patient-consumer demand, and contemporary (and future) instances of medicalization.

The demand to improve physical education process of elementary school pupils by the tools of innovative dancing fitness branch – Zumba Kids is described in the article. Positive changes in dynamics among children have occurred in indicators of functional and physical preparation in conditions of the experiment. The goal of the work is the optimization process of physical education of elementary school pupils by Zumba Kids tools. There were investigated children’s physical development, functional and physical preparation and experimentally was checked the effectiveness of the implementation program of Zumba Kids tolls into process of physical education. There were 54 participants, 26 among them are boys and 28 are girls (the children’s age is 9 years old). The methods of the research are theoretical analysis and literature sources generalization; physiological research methods; pedagogical observation (passing of control standards); pedagogical experiment and mathematical statistics methods. There are presented and scientifically justified the program of implementing Zumba Kids tools into physical education lessons of elementary school pupils. The content of the program consists of the synthesis of energetic modern dances with aerobics, fitness exercises, stretching and also exercises for breathing exercises and muscle relaxation. The elaborated program is realized in the educational process and proved its effectiveness. The results of investigation have shown its positive influence on the functional and physical preparation of elementary school pupils. It was proved by mathematical statistics methods.

This chapter provides an introduction to women's health with attention to biological, psychological, and sociological aspects of women's lives. We suggest that further exploration of gender differences in symptom presentation, diagnosis, prognosis, risk factors, treatment effectiveness, and psychosocial factors for various disease entities is needed in order to enhance appropriate prevention and intervention strategies for women and their families. Specifically, we present overviews of the five leading causes of death among women (i.e., CHD, lung and breast cancer, stroke, COPD, and HIV/AIDS); the leading cause of injury to women (i.e., domestic violence); and chronic diseases common in women (i.e., arthritis, fibromyalgia, and osteoporosis). Mental health conditions prevalent among women, as well as information on the association between mental and physical health, are addressed, followed by a discussion of women in mental health treatment, health insurance, and relationships with healthcare providers. Stressful conditions related to pregnancy (i.e., miscarriage, infertility, postpartum reactions, and peripartum cardiomyopathy) are highlighted. Last, we discuss social and cultural influences on women's health focusing on the relationship between socioeconomic status, multiple roles, sex roles, and socialization as they relate to psychological and physiological illness. We conclude with the current status of women in health care and psychology and future directions in the field.
