Fibroblast growth factor-23 levels in maintenance hemodialysis patients in India

Abstract: Fibroblast growth factor-23 (FGF-23) levels start rising early in patients with chronic kidney disease and is implicated in cardiovascular and overall mortality of hemodialysis patients. We conducted a prospective observational cohort study in stable dialysis patients looking into the levels of FGF-23 in hemodialysis patients and its association with various demographic and biochemical variables and mortality. A total of 91 patients were enrolled in the study. The mean FGF-23 levels were very high (1152.7 pg/m… Show more

“…As of December 31, 2011, the prevalence of uremia in Taiwan ranked first. From 2003 to 2010, among the etiological composition of 7474 new hemodialysis patients in China, the proportion of chronic glomerulonephritis decreased, while the proportion of diabetes gradually increased [ 9 ]. With the aging of the population and the prolongation of the survival period of primary diseases such as diabetes, hypertension, and obesity, the prevalence of uremia is increasing year by year.…”

“…Fibroblast growth factor 23 (FGF23) is a bone-derived hormone that regulates renal phosphate reabsorption and vitamin D synthesis in renal proximal tubules [1]. Importantly, FGF23 levels start increasing early in the course of chronic kidney disease (CKD) and reach extremely high levels in patients on dialysis [2][3][4][5]. Serum phosphate (iP), calcium, and intact parathyroid hormone (iPTH) are proposed to regulate FGF23 levels in uremic patients on maintenance hemodialysis [6], and current data suggest higher circulating levels of FGF23 are associated with mortality [7][8][9][10][11], especially cardiovascular mortality [10,[12][13][14][15] due to vascular calcification [16][17][18][19] or left ventricular hypertrophy (LVH) [20][21][22][23].…”

“…A study by Anandh et al in HD patients (n = 91) with a mean dialysis vintage of 47.2 months had a mean FGF-23 of 1152.7 pg/ml [ 8 ]. In another study in HD patients by Torres et al (n = 99) with a mean HD vintage of 6.8 years, the mean FGF-23 was >30000pg/ml [ 9 ].…”
