“…(a) Sodium thioglycollate medium. The greater part of this study has been devoted to a simple medium previously shown, Reed and Orr (1941), to support luxuriant growth of the gas gangrene-tetanus group of clostridia: 1). Methylene blue in the medium is reduced to its colorless phase during aultoclaving.…”

“…Spray (1936) reviewed earlier work on the use of agar and successfully used it in the cultivation of clostridia. Brewer (1940) combined the use of reducing agents and agar in a successful medium which has been widely used (McClung, 1940;Reed and Orr, 1941).These additions produce at least theoretical complications. To broth or peptone solutions, active oxidation-reduction systems, there is added another oxidation-reduction system in the form of a reducing agent; the establishment of equilibrium with the atmosphere is delayed by the addition of agar; a further oxidation-reduction system is introduced with the inoculum.…”

“…Anaerobic spore-formers are distinguished in Table If which is based on data from Reed & Orr (1941), Memorandum (1943, Willis (1960 Further details of the saprophytic acid-fast bacilli and Nocardia species are shown in Table lgg, compiled mainly from Gordon & Mihm (1957, 1959, and R. E. Gordon (personal communication). According to Dr R. E. Gordon only three species of Nocardia have been adequately described, but three other sorts may later be found worthy of specific rank.…”

“…Spray (1936) set up a "Tentative Key" for the sporulating anaerobes by the use of physiological tests and morphological characteristics. Other classifications by biochemical reactions have been 1 Present address: Department of Microbiology, College of Physicians and Surgeons of Columbia University, New York, N.Y. formulated by Duffett (1935), Reed and Orr (1941), Marshal, Wetzler, and Kawatomari (1956), Brooks and Epps (1959), and Kaufman and Weaver (1960).…”
