“…Of note, the formation of cylindrical aggregates is specific to SQ-Dox and contrasts with the shape of other squalene-based nanoparticles. We assume that it originates from Dox stacking. Indeed, Dox is known to self-assemble in aqueous solution to form dimers, in parallel or antiparallel orientation, oligomers, or fibers, depending on the concentration, the pH of the solution, and the presence of added salts. The absorbance and fluorescence spectra of SQ-Dox in water confirmed the stacking of Dox moieties in nanoparticles for concentration above 5 μM (Figure S5).…”

“…Alternatively, there are evidences that Dox itself and other hydrophobic drugs would self-assemble into bril-shaped aggregates under physiological condition. [29][30][31] Therefore, it is likely that in our system, Dox moieties aggregate and form the hydrophobic core, while the PGA chains take mixed a-helix and random coil secondary structure and form the hydrophilic sheath of the brils.…”

“…As a consequence, the retrogradation may occur in a greater extent leading to significant variations of the contact angle measurements for CSpd35 and CSg35 materials. However, plasticizer migration effects have to be considered during the storage time of the films, especially in those containing glycerol. For this reason, the angle measurement could be affected by the accumulation of plasticizer molecules in the surface.…”
