Fibre-based post systems: a review

Abstract: Objectives This article presents a review of published literature examining fibre-based endodontic post systems. Data sources A MEDLINE search was carried out for any articles in dental journals pertaining to fibre-based post systems. Wherever possible articles cited were obtained from the journals and where this was not possible abstracts were obtained. Where no abstract was available the article was not considered for evaluation. Data extraction Articles were reviewed by a single observer and subject to meet… Show more

“…While the results of such studies are often confl icting, overall consensus appears to suggest that the currently available resin fi bre post systems do not provide the much anticipated superior chemical retention to root dentine when used in conjunction with contemporary dental adhesive systems. 25 Neither do they appear to offer a vastly improved retention to composite resin cores by sole virtue of their chemical composition. 26 This may be due to the resin fi bre posts being industrially cured, with a high level of polymerisation and concomitant relatively small quantities of free resin available to interact with the reactive chemical constituents present in resin lutes or composite resin cores.…”

“…26 This may be due to the resin fi bre posts being industrially cured, with a high level of polymerisation and concomitant relatively small quantities of free resin available to interact with the reactive chemical constituents present in resin lutes or composite resin cores. 25,26 Studies appear to show that physical surface features such as serrations, 26 the use of posts with greater diameters 27,28 or the presence of a retentive head design at the coronal aspect of the post 26,29 appear be more signifi cant with respect to improving retention of the post to the root and that of the core to the post, respectively. The latter features may improve the ability of the resin lute/ core material to interlock to the resin fi bre post.…”

“…Fiber posts are introduced as an alternative to cast posts and metal dowels due to their modulus elasticity being closer to that of dentin and this feature reduces the risk of root fracture (4)(5)(6). Fiber based posts are essentially composite materials and composed of fibres of silica surrounded by a matrix of polymer resin, usually an epoxy resin (7).…”

“…Also, they have some other advantages such as biocompatibility, improvement of light transmission and the optical effects of esthetic restoration (7,10) Since most failures of fiber posts are because of decementation, the bonding effectiveness into the root canal is crucial for the retention of these posts.…”

“…Previous studies of FRC posts mainly focused on prefabricated FRC posts composed of glass or quartz 24,[28][29][30] . However, the type of resin matrices and the fiber contents of prefabricated FRC posts differed, making comparisons of absolute results impossible.…”
