“…The results of our studies demonstrated that the ascending colonic secretion observed during intragastric enteral feeding is reversed when SCFAs are infused directly into the cecum 20 . The major source of SCFA production in the ascending colon is the anaerobic metabolism of unabsorbed polysaccharide or “fiber” by bacterial polysaccharidase enzymes 21 . It seemed to us that the reversal of colonic secretion was a strong argument in favor of altering the composition of polymeric enteral diets to include a rapidly fermentable fiber source as a means of preventing the onset of enteral feeding–related diarrhea.…”
