The weight ratio of PE and PS in ternary PS/SBR/PE blends has been changed at constant SBR content (25 wt%). When the matrix is either PE or PS, the dispersed phase has a core-shell structure with SBR forming the shell. The size of the core expectedly increases with the content of the core-forming polymer. In some composition range, the three phases are simultaneously continuous, SBR being localized in between the cocontinuous PE and PS phases. The ultimate mechanical properties of the ternary blends containing SBR/PE and SBR/PS core-shell dispersed phases are close to the properties of the PS/SBR and PE/SBR binary blends, respectively. Some synergism in the elongation at break of the ternary blends is observed when core-shell SBR/PS phases are dispersed in PE matrix.

Abstract-The use of dual compatibilizers, poly (2-ethyl-2-oxazoline) (PEOX) and polymeric methylene diphenyl diisocyanate (pMDI) in Novatein thermoplastic protein from bloodmeal (NTP) and PBS blends were investigated. A composition of 50% of NTP was used for all formulations with different percentage compatibilizer. Mechanical, morphology, thermal and water absorption were used as analysis methods to study blend properties. To improve compatibility, two different approaches to blending the compatibilizers were used. Firstly, PEOX was added before extrusion this has improved the blend's tensile strength. Secondly, addition of PEOX during NTP production followed by pMDI added before injection molding, showed a futher improvement in tensile strength. SEM revealed that PEOX has improved the dispersion of NTP and pMDI has strengthened the adhesion between phases consistent with mechanical property results. A broad tan δ peak in DMA analysis was obtained indicated improved compatibility in blends using two compatibilizers. In spite of that, the addition of dual compatibilizer has reduced the water resistance of PBS.

PHEAs [α,β-poly(2-hydroxyethyl-DL-aspartamides)], a class of poly(amino acid), have been widely studied as biodegradable and biocompatible polymers for potential biomedical and pharmaceutical applications. In this study, we investigated a homogeneous blend of PHEA with poly(N-vinyl pyrrolidone) (PNVP) and its semi-IPN (semi-interpenetrating polymer network) gels. Blend films were prepared by a solution casting method. The resulting blends were totally transparent over the whole composition ranges and the single T g , changing monotonously with composition, was observed by DSC to confirm the miscibility between these two polymers. FTIR was used to discuss the possible hydrogen-bonding interaction between polymers. In addition, semi-IPN type gels were prepared by chemical crosslinking of PHEA/PNVP blend solution using hexamethylene diisocyanate (HMDI) as a crosslinking reagent. The prepared gel was characterized by their swelling property and morphology.
