Fibers based on propagating bound states in the continuum

Abstract: We show that a circular periodic array of N dielectric cylinders supports nearly bound states in the continuum (BICs) propagating along the cylinders. These propagating nearly BICs with extremely large Q factors of order exp(λN) are surrounded by resonant modes weakly leaking into the radiation continuum. We present leaky zones in the vicinity of different types of BICs: symmetry protected nearly BICs with the resonant width proportional to the squared propagation constant Γ ∼ k 2 z , non-symmetry protected ne… Show more

“…Complex wave mixing effects were also considered by using non radiating states in [128], which reported Four Wave Mixing (FWM) in a similar structure of [109], and composed of a germanium nanodisk (200 nm of thickness and 625 nm of radius) in which two incident waves at different frequencies ( 1 and 2 ) give rise to four waves (3 1 , [38,117,[121][122][123][124].…”

“…This simple physics explains appearance of BICs in periodic photonic structures. Therefore, BICs can transfer energy without radiation losses in periodic structures (gratings, chains, metasurfaces) even if there are open diffraction channels [124,[149][150][151][152]. However, it is possible only at certain frequencies.…”

“…Certain designs of photonic crystal fibers can significantly suppress leakage without a bandgap [29][30][31], but residual radiation loss remains. Fibers with separable permittivity profiles have been suggested [32] but cannot be realized as exact values of permittivity need to be achieved.…”
