Fiber Sensors for Strain Measurements and Axle Counting in High-Speed Railway Applications

Abstract: High-speed railway systems have begun to be widely deployed. To meet increasingly stringent requirements under harsh running environments, we propose and demonstrate three fiber-Bragg-grating (FBG)-based approaches for the strain measurement and axle counting in high-speed railway systems, including matched gratings, grating under uneven strain distribution, and semi-free grating. All approaches are laboratory verified and evaluated using the train load platform. Pros and cons are also discussed in terms of fe… Show more

“…They have many unique advantages over the traditional electrical sensors such as light weight, small size, immunity to electromagnetic interference, and long-distance and wide-range measurement capability (Nichols et al, 2007;Yan et al, 2011;Yoon et al, 2011;Murayama et al, 2012). Several researchers have employed FBG sensors to measure the geosynthetic strain in reinforced embankments or landfills (Brianҫ;on and Simon, 2012; Zamara et al, 2012).…”

“…Optical fiber sensors (OFSs) have advantages of small dimensions, high sensitivity, and immunity against electromagnetic interference (EMI) [1][2][3]. Therefore, OFSs have been widely used for health monitoring applications in transportation, civil structures, aerospace, marine and smart structures, etc.…”

“…Although many techniques based on electronics or manually operation are still been used, OFS is proved to be more efficiency and attractive especially in harsh environments. A variety of OFS have been developed for strain and temperature measurement, including the distributed techniques based on the Brillouin scattering methods and the discrete fiber sensors based on FBG [1].…”

“…O PTICAL fiber sensing technology has been widely investigated and implemented in various research fields and applications, owing to its advantages on strong immunity to electromagnetic environments, compact size, light weight, and long transmission distance [1]- [6]. As for practical applications, the wavelength demodulation is of great importance for wavelength-detection based optical fiber sensors [1], [2], [6]- [9].…”

“…As for practical applications, the wavelength demodulation is of great importance for wavelength-detection based optical fiber sensors [1], [2], [6]- [9]. Generally, two categories of demodulation techniques are usually employed, one using the scanning process and the other using the wavelength-to-power mapping.…”
