Fiber-optic refractometer based on a phase-shifted fiber Bragg grating on a side-hole fiber

Abstract: A fiber-optic refractive index (RI) sensor based on a π-phase-shifted fiber-Bragg-grating (πFBG) inscribed on a side-hole fiber is presented. The reflection spectrum of the πFBG features two narrow notches associated with the two polarization modes and the spectral spacing of the notches is used for high-sensitivity RI sensing with little temperature cross-sensitivity. The side-hole fiber maintains its outer diameter and mechanical strength. The side-hole fiber is also naturally integrated into a microfluidic … Show more

“…When the temperature was between 30 °C and 100 °C, the CTE was between 5.19 × 10 −7 /°C and 5.48 × 10 −7 /°C, TOC was between 6.69 × 10 −6 /°C and 6.89 × 10 −6 /°C, and was between 5.8 × 10 −6 /°C and 5.97 × 10 −6 /°C, which agreed well with the theoretical values at room temperature [ 19 , 20 , 21 ]. Thus, the curve equation could be used for silica-based FBG standardization procedures at high temperatures.…”

“…Theoretical calculations, however, pre-dicted the RI sensitivity of 101 nm/RIU when using a 2.7-µm core fibre. Other than the aforementioned modifications to standard FBGs, there are also phase-shift FBGs [51,282,283] and birefringent FBG [284][285][286][287] applied for sensing.…”

“…Due to the novel internal configuration of this fiber, SHF has become a research hotspot in the field of fiber sensing in recent years. And many sensor structures based on SHF have been reported, such as long-period fiber grating [1], fiber Bragg grating [2], Sagnac interferometer [3], Fabry–Perot Interferometer [4,5], Mach–Zehnder Interferometer [6], and Michelson Interferometer [7]. However, the research on the use of SHF integrated electro-optical materials for the fabrication of all-fiber electro-optic functional devices has hardly been demonstrated.…”
