Fiber-optic localization by geometric space coding with a two-dimensional gray code

Abstract: With the objective of monitoring motion within a room, we segment the two-dimensional (2D) floor space into discrete cells and encode each cell with a binary code word generated by a fiber. We design a set of k-neighbor-local codes to localize an extended object and, particularly when k = 2, employ a 2D gray code to localize a human by tracking his or her footsteps. Methods for implementing the codes in a fiber web are discussed, and we demonstrate the experimental result with the fiber mat. The observed syste… Show more

“…Indoor human localization with fiber sensors has been explored for multiplex sampling. [4][5][6][7] More specifically, researchers have configured a group of fibers as a binary sensor array with a codebook created using multiplex sampling design. In this way, with a proper deployment configuration, a fiber sensor array can encode the floor pressure distribution, and target locations can be decoded from the binary measurement vector.…”

“…The human model and fiber sensor response model are discussed in [7] where we show how to localize a single person on a 4 4 grid using four fiber sensors. With this experimental setup we localize up to two people in 64 positions with 16 fiber channels.…”

“…We have been working on such multiplexing sensors by modulating the sensor receiver pattern [3]- [6]. In particular, we have demonstrated a fiber web deployed according to two-dimensional Gray code to localize an extended source [7]. Fiber, when used as a line sensor, allows the designer great flexibility to change its receiver pattern by weaving it in the object space.…”
