Fiber-Optic-Based Biosensor as an Innovative Technology for Point-of-Care Testing Detection of Foodborne Pathogenic Bacteria To Defend Food and Agricultural Product Safety

Abstract: Food safety is a concerning issue globally. Foodborne-pathogenic-bacteria-derived foodborne disease outbreaks have increased the threat to human health. The accurate and rapid detection of foodborne bacteria is of great significance for food safety. A fiber-optic-based biosensor has emerged as a powerful technique for the point-of-care testing of foodborne bacteria in food and agricultural products. This Perspective discusses the opportunities and challenges of fiber-optic-based biosensors for foodborne bacter… Show more

“…Other biosensors whose sensitivity was reported in terms of CFU/mL, actually register DNA, and from the average size of which the number of bacteria can be calculated [24]. Given the danger of food contamination with H. pylori, on-site control by biosensors is extremely important, as highlighted in [25].…”

“…Additionally, patients can engage in flexible self‐monitoring, empowering them to better understand and manage their conditions. Due to its rapid analysis and easy operation, POCT has been widely adopted in various fields such as medical care, 3–5 environmental monitoring 6,7 and food safety 8,9 . The paradigm shift in modern medical practices has steered hospitals from mere therapeutic endeavors toward comprehensive, systematized healthcare systems encompassing prevention, wellness, treatment, and rehabilitation, thereby furnishing society with all‐encompassing, high‐quality services.…”

“…The current biosensors focus on the detection of one or more certain disease biomarkers that accurately reflect the state of the disease for in vitro diagnosis. The global epidemic of COVID together with other diseases of cancer and foodborne disease put in evidence the excellent demand for the rapid, accurate, simple, and large‐scale scanning or diagnosis in vitro, also called “POCT” 2–4 . it needs to be more accurate than clinical diagnosis relying on the bits of the biomarkers due to the significant individual variability.…”
