Fiber cavity ring down and gain amplification effect

Abstract: Abstract:The effect of an erbium-doped fiber amplifier (EDFA) placed inside the fiber ring of a cavity ring down (CRD) configuration is studied. The limitations and advantages of this configuration are discussed, and the study of the ring-down time as a function of the current applied and gain to the EDFA is also presented. In this case, the power fluctuations in the output signal are strongly dependent on the cavity ring-down time with the EDFA gain.

“…This will translate to a very small cavity length which leads to high radiation loss and low-quality factor [18][19][20]. The use of a gain medium before the lasing threshold to enhance the quality factor has also been explored [21][22][23]. Yet, the gain medium introduces spontaneous emission noise and complexity into the whole system.…”

“…The inherent loss of the cavity itself due to high losses of the passive devices is a major limitation for CRD systems. In order to overcome this drawback, two new configurations (insertion of an optical amplifier in the cavity [14] and a simplified linear cavity using a single fibre coupler together with two mirrors [15]) have been recently studied.…”

“…Recently, a fiber-based CRD technique that used a large core multimode fiber-cavity design based on highly reflective gold coatings was demonstrated [5]. Recently, it is demonstrated the effect of using an EDFA for signal amplification inside the fiber ring of a cavity ring-down configuration [6].…”
