Fiber Bragg grating sensor-based monitoring strategy for slope deformation in centrifugal model test

Abstract: Purpose Centrifugal model tests can accelerate the characterization of landslides and demonstrate the form of slope failure, which is an important measure to research its instability mechanisms. Simply observing the slope landslide before and after a centrifugal model test cannot reveal the processes involved in real-time deformation. Electromagnetic sensors have severed as an existing method for real-time measurement, however, this approach has significant challenges, including poor signal quality, interferen… Show more

“…The vibration sensor based on FBG sensing technology features high sensitivity, low transmission loss, strong electromagnetic immunity, etc. 1 , 2 . Multiplexing FBG sensors such as acceleration, temperature, displacement, pressure, pH, humidity and magnetic field in the same optical fiber can overcome the need to use multiple sensors and heavy cables in traditional electrical sensors, as well as the shortcomings of weak anti-interference capability 3 – 5 .…”

“…The measurement of low-frequency vibration signals below 50 Hz is a very important work in the fields of seismic monitoring, structural health monitoring of large- and medium-sized engineering projects and resource exploration (Goto et al , 2019; Guo et al , 2019). Traditional electronic sensors are widely used in the field of vibration acceleration measurement.…”

“…Fiber Bragg grating (FBG) is a special sensitive element of OFS and promises new advantages such as wavelength coding without interference from power fluctuation of the light source, and the potential for multiple FBGs to be arrayed into a single fiber. Thus, FBGs have been applied to many commercial and engineering applications including slope deformation [3], [4], structural engineering [5], [6], bridge [7], and railway [8] in the past two decades.…”
