Fiber and phenolic compounds contribution to the hepatoprotective effects of mango diets in rats fed high cholesterol/sodium cholate

Abstract: The present study evaluated the contribution of mango fiber (MF) and mango phenolic compounds (MP) to the hepatoprotective effect of freeze‐dried mango pulp (FDM) cultivar (cv.) “Ataulfo” diets in high cholesterol/sodium cholate (HCC)–fed rats. Male Wistar rats were fed with a HCC diet for 12 weeks, either untreated, or supplemented with MF, MP, FDM, or a control diet (no HCC; n = 6/group). All mango treatments significantly decreased hepatic cholesterol deposition and altered its fatty acid profile, whereas M… Show more

“…The carbohydrate content of the formulated ice cream samples ranged from 23.4% to 15.79% and was all significantly different (p < 0.05). The carbohydrate content of the control sample was 21.57% which agreed with other findings [26], which observed that dairy ice cream is high in carbohydrates and sugar. The carbohydrate content of the formulated ice cream samples might have been impacted by the carbohydrate content of kunu-zaki beverage drink known for use to replace lost energy during activity.…”

“…Nutritional fiber can affect the rate of nutrient resorption, gut mortality, and thus affect the intestinal barrier in general. Epidemiological data from a multi-ethnic cohort [13] and findings in animal models [14] suggest that a low intake of fiber contributes to the development of NAFLD. Indeed, a landmark study further highlighted the fact that dietary intake of fiber is markedly lower in overweight patients with NAFLD when compared to isocaloric nourished weight matched individuals without NAFLD [15].…”
