PurposeFew empirical studies examined the relationship between life expectancy and income in India. This study aims to examine the impact of life expectancy on economic growth in India by incorporating all the major states of India.Design/methodology/approachThis study is based on secondary data and includes 16 major states of India covering the periods 2000–2014. The author used panel fixed effect model (FEM) to examine the impact of life expectancy on economic growth.FindingsEmpirical analysis revealed a positive trend in life expectancy in India. In association with life expectancy, the author found continuous growth in the elderly population. The result of the FEM shows that gains in life expectancy positively affect economic growth in India. The empirical findings do not support any negative impact of life expectancy gains on economic growth.Originality/valueThis study is the outcome of the independent and original research work of the authors and contributes significantly to the literature on the demography–economic relationship. In this study the relationship between population, elderly population and economic growth is analyzed theoretically, taking into account the demographic change of the Bulgarian population and the more aging phenomenon. Thus, the change in the age structure of the Bulgarian population was investigated and the factors affecting the growth of the relationship between economic growth were investigated. In this study, attempts were made to determine the size of the changes taking place in the country's economy, depending on the livelihoods in Bulgaria.

Os efeitos econômicos do envelhecimento populacional é um tema ainda pouco estudado em países em desenvolvimento. No contexto brasileiro, o Rio Grande do Sul é um dos estados com maiores taxas de envelhecimento populacional. Esta mudança demográfica altera o perfil do consumo da economia, influenciando outras variáveis relacionadas. O objetivo deste trabalho é analisar os impactos das mudanças demográficas na arrecadação de impostos sobre consumo no Rio Grande do Sul. Para isso, é utilizado um modelo de insumo-produto regional. Os resultados mostram que o envelhecimento populacional gera um perfil de consumo que reduz a carga destes impostos na economia.
