Few photon switching with slow light in hollow fiber

Abstract: Cold atoms confined inside a hollow-core photonic-crystal fiber with core diameters of a few photon wavelengths are a promising medium for studying nonlinear optical interactions at extremely low light levels. The high electric field intensity per photon and interaction lengths not limited by diffraction are some of the unique features of this system. Here, we present the results of our first nonlinear optics experiments in this system including a demonstration of an all-optical switch that is activated at ene… Show more

“…This setup was first proposed by Ruseckas et al in [28], to which we refer the reader for a detailed explanation of the system and only quote the resulting equation here. The system comprises of a waveguide system coupled to an ensemble of atoms, which could be realized either in a tapered fiber [47,48] or a hollow-core waveguide [49][50][51][52][53]. The atoms are characterized by the three hyperfine ground levels; one populated state |g and two unpopulated states |s1 and |s2 .…”

“…The resulting expression gives χ eff ∝ 1 / N . It clearly shows that there is an optimization to undertake regarding the number of molecules in the array: On one hand, there must be enough molecules to create sufficient optical depth to couple-in the polaritons [14]. On the other hand, in order to maximize the nonlinearity in Eq.…”

“…AOS using an electromagnetically induced absorption grating (EIG) can be formed by a weak probe beam interacting with a strong standing wave coupled in a threelevel system [5]. More recently, AOS based on EIT has been realized in an atom-filled hollow fiber with light pulses containing only a few hundred photons [6,7]. All-optical phase control was also experimentally demonstrated as EIT-based cross-phase modulation [8].…”
